Bilbao is a global destination for culture and the arts. However, nature plays its own important big role for locals and travelers alike. With numerous parks along with abundant away-from-the-city locations to hike, sail, kayak and paraglide.
Bilbao offers some unique areas nearby to enjoy natural sports and adventures. With about 35 known hiking routes around Bilbao, there are plenty of options for outdoor enthusiasts. Enjoy one of 27 hikes, 8 pilgrim walks, and bike routes.
1. Lauros - Mungia - Gernika - Morga is a 77-kilometer loop trail located near Bilbao, Basque Country, Spain that features a river and is rated as difficult. The trail is primarily used for mountain biking and is accessible year-round. Bilboa's hills and mountains are the best vantage points to soak up the beauty and the history of inland Bizkaia. This area is known for its amazing Hiking and Paragliding.
2. Camino del Norte - Bilbao to Ontón is a 30.4 kilometer lightly trafficked point-to-point trail located near Bilbao. It features a river and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for hiking and backpacking and is accessible year-round.
3. Love Cheese? Try the Idiazábal Cheese Trail. Named after the celebrated Idiazábal cheese. This trail follows the journey of this traditional Basque offering, from its origins in the mountains to its creation in Idiazábal. The walk is a circular route, starting and ending in Segura. The last section from Ordizia to Segura is said to be the most interesting. The entire trail takes six days to complete.
4. Visit Dragonstone! If you are a Game of Thrones connaisseur you will surely recognize this location. This hike is 47 minutes from Bilboa via car. You will hike to a shrine on the magical islet of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, across a bridge, and up and down 241 steps. Don't forget to make a free reservation via the internet if you want to be sure you are allowed on the island.
